Finalist ‘Self-Catering Property of the Year’ 2017 Cumbria Tourism Awards!

Highly Commended ‘Self Catering Property of the Year’ 2017 Cumbria Tourism Awards!

Following a year of major refurbishment works ending in May 2016, this magnificent Georgian property has undergone a complete transformation. Located a stone’s throw from Coniston village (less than a third of a mile), set on the road to the striking and historical Coppermines Valley lies this spacious Georgian home. The owners, Jane & Simon have, with much effort managed to create a home of the highest quality standards whilst carefully managing to preserve the properties outstanding historical features.

Historically Gate House had early associations with the family who developed the 19th century Coppermines, and was the home in the early 20th century to the famous lakes artist Alfred Heaton Cooper – who, at that time, renamed it ‘Sondheim’. Keen to retain historical links the owners have ensured that many works of Cooper adorn the cottage walls.

From its peaceful situ the house enjoys delightful aspects overlooking the open fields to the front and the bubbling Church Beck to the rear. Whilst the outside of the property offers areas of solitude and calm, it is inside where the real allure of this beautiful home can be found. In essence Gate House is a beautiful house that has been lovingly transformed into a dream home. The perfect place for romantics, families, friends and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

In the heart of the English Lake District lies the historical copper mining village of Coniston, perfectly positioned alongside the picturesque Coniston Water and underneath the majestic Coniston Fells of which Coniston Old Man, 2635ft, is the most famous. With the largest range of cottages in the area we are sure to help you find your perfect Coniston cottage.

Today the village is welcoming, warm and friendly. The two Victorian streets still house traditional shops such as the village butcher, grocer, bakery, newsagent, dairy, five pubs, several cafes and highly acclaimed restaurant (Steam Bistro), so there’s enough to keep you occupied during your time here.

Together with the surrounding picturesque hamlets, Coniston is an excellent centre for outdoor enthusiasts, with some superb climbing, walking, water sports, fishing and cycling to be had. For those who like to keep their feet firmly on the ground there’s The Ruskin Museum, which depicts the fascinating history of the area including the famous water speed record attempt of Donald Campbell and on the eastern shores of the lake lies Brantwood the Victorian home of philosopher John Ruskin, where regular events and art courses are held. Should you just wish to relax during your time here then the tremendous landscape of cascading waterfalls, streams, lakes and mountains should help you switch off from modern life. Delights such as Tarn Hows and Grizedale Forest are nearby and prove to be ever popular with visitors of all ages.

The lake remains a central focus of the village and a whole host of water sports can be enjoyed by day trippers. To this day passengers are still enjoying The National Trust’s Victorian steam yacht Gondola, which won Cumbria Tourism’s 2016 visitor attraction of the year award. The lake also holds historical significance, 50 years ago, Donald Campbell chose Coniston Water for his World Water Speed Record achievements in his jet boat Bluebird, reaching over 300mph. In honour of his amazing achievements a Speed Records Week is held every November.

Coniston enjoys the best of both worlds …..

This is a lovely house, very clean and lots of equipment and extras. It was a lovely week, thank you! We will tell our friends and family.

We have stayed in many cottages before but this is our favourite! We walked through the door and instantly felt at home and the stresses and strains of life began to ease. Lots of walking, eating and drinking, sleeping well in the comfy beds & listening to the water in the beck all mean we return home reluctantly, we would much rather stay! Hope to return soon.

What a fantastic cottage! Jason ran the Lakeland 100 fell race and relaxing in Gate House afterwards was fantastic! We all felt very relaxed straight away. A beautiful cottage in a wonderful location, hopefully we’ll be able to return next year!

Wonderful holiday in a superb location. This holiday had been planned by others in our party as a surprise 60th birthday break for me! Such a beautiful house to stay in with everything we needed.

What a wonderful way to introduce our family to this wonderful area. This beautiful house provided the perfect base & made our holiday even more special. There was even a ‘can we all come back again’ discussion during our last drink outside – what better end to our week!

Returned to this beautiful house for a second time since renovation. Perfect location for walks from the door every day and handy for food & drinks in the village. Will be returning to celebrate our family Christmas here as we did last year!

Beautiful house, we came here a few times before restoration work but now WOW! It used to be pretty good but now it’s exceptionally appointed, 4 en suites is great, rear garden area is perfect in very sunny weather, which we’ve had all week. Thank you, we will return.

We have had a wonderful week staying in the beautiful Gate House. It is every bit as wonderful as the website suggests and the owners really have thought about everything. We very much hope to return!
